Implant dentistry · Planned in 3D

A tooth that stays put.

A dental implant is a titanium post placed in the jaw to hold a new tooth, bridge or denture. At Sardinia House in Holborn we plan every implant on a CBCT scan, place it through a 3D-printed guide where that helps, and make the crown from a digital scan. Treatment usually takes three to six months from placement to finished tooth. Implant from £1,500; crown from £2,000.

Who it is for

When an implant is the right replacement

One tooth missing, the rest sound

An implant replaces a single tooth without touching its neighbours. There is no need to shape healthy teeth to carry a bridge, and the new tooth cleans like the one it replaced, with floss passing either side of it.

Several teeth, or a whole arch

Two or more implants can carry a bridge, and a small number can support a full arch of fixed teeth. The design depends on bone, bite and how many teeth are involved, which the 3D scan shows us clearly before we begin.

A denture that moves when you eat

Implants can anchor a loose denture so it clicks firmly into place and still comes out for cleaning. For many long-term denture wearers this is the change that makes eating out comfortable again.

A tooth that cannot be saved

When a tooth has cracked below the gum or lost too much structure to restore, an implant is often the most durable replacement. In the right case it can be placed at the same visit as the extraction.

The difference

What makes the difference

Planned on a 3D scan

Our Dentsply Sirona CBCT scanner shows the height, width and density of your bone and where the nerves and sinuses sit. The implant is positioned on screen against that image, so the surgery follows a plan rather than an estimate.

Placed through a printed guide

Where it helps, we print a surgical guide on our SprintRay printers from your plan. During surgery the guide rests on your teeth and steers the implant to the exact spot, depth and angle we planned, so the procedure is usually smaller and healing quicker.

A crown made from a scan, not a mould

The final tooth is scanned and designed on screen, then milled on site or made by a master ceramist off site. Shade and shape are checked against your other teeth in person, and a provisional tooth made here in the meantime means wherever we can, you do not leave without a tooth.

A hospital oral surgery background

Implants here are provided by three dentists: Dr Shivan Dave, whose hospital oral surgery background at King's College Hospital means difficult extractions, bone grafting and implant placement sit comfortably in the same pair of hands; Dr Adam White; and Dr Jonathan Davies. Dr Amit Patel plans and restores many of the cases, designing the final teeth before the surgery is planned around them. Complex cases are reviewed together at our peer-review sessions, so you benefit from all of them.

The process

From first scan to finished tooth

01

Consultation and imaging

We examine your mouth, take a CBCT scan and an intra-oral scan, and talk through what you want the end result to do. If an implant is not the best option for you, we tell you plainly and go through what else would work.

02

A plan in writing

The implant is planned on screen and, with your agreement, a guide is printed. You receive a written treatment plan with every stage and exact fee before anything begins, and a treatment coordinator to answer questions in between.

03

Placing the implant

The implant is placed under local anaesthetic, with sedation available if you would prefer it. Placing a single implant usually takes around an hour. A temporary tooth can be made for a visible gap so you are never without one.

04

Healing

Over the following months the bone grows onto the implant surface and locks it in place. We check progress at a review appointment, and the gum is shaped so the finished tooth emerges naturally from it.

05

The finished tooth

Once the implant is firm, we scan it and make the crown, bridge or denture attachment from the scan. It is tried in, adjusted and fitted, and you leave with a tooth you can simply use.

Afterwards

Aftercare

Swelling and soreness over the following few days are to be expected and settle with everyday painkillers. Eat on the other side at first and keep the area clean as we show you. Once the final tooth is fitted, brush and clean between it as you would your own teeth, and keep your hygiene visits. Implants depend on healthy gums, so we review them at every check-up.

Good to know

The questions we are asked most

How much does a dental implant cost in London?+

As a guide, the implant itself is from £1,500 and the crown on top from £2,000; the consultation is from £150 and the CBCT scan from £195. Bone grafting is quoted on application. You receive the exact figure in writing before treatment starts, and finance is available subject to status.

Does having an implant hurt?+

The implant goes in once the area is numb; you will notice pressure, but it should not hurt. Most people find the days afterwards less uncomfortable than they expected, and often easier than an extraction. IV sedation with our dental sedationist is available if you would rather be deeply relaxed throughout.

How long does the whole process take?+

From placement to finished tooth, usually three to six months, most of it healing time with only a few appointments. Where bone grafting is needed first, allow several months more. The timeline is set out in your written plan.

Will I need a bone graft?+

Not always. The CBCT scan tells us whether there is enough bone to hold an implant securely. Where there is not, a graft can rebuild it, either at the same time as placement or as a separate stage beforehand. We discuss this with you before anything is decided.

How long do implants last?+

Kept clean and with healthy gums, an implant should serve you for many years, and if the crown on top wears it can simply be remade. Smoking, untreated gum disease and heavy grinding shorten that lifespan, which is why we talk about them at consultation.

Am I suitable for implants?+

Age itself is rarely the issue. General health, gum condition and bone are what matter, and most adults with a missing tooth can be treated. Some medical conditions and medicines need extra care, so we take a full history and may write to your doctor first.

Is everything done at the practice in Holborn?+

Yes. Scanning, planning, surgery, guide printing and the final crown all happen at Sardinia House on Lincoln's Inn Fields, around five minutes from Holborn station. Nothing is sent away, and the same team sees you through from first scan to fitted tooth.

Can I get dental implants on the NHS?+

Not at Sardinia House, which is a private practice. NHS funding for implants is limited to a small number of hospital cases, such as teeth lost through cancer treatment or trauma, so for most people implants are a private treatment. Our implants are from £1,500, with the crown from £2,000, and finance is available for plans over £1,000, subject to status.

What are the risks, and can an implant fail?+

A small number of implants do not integrate with the bone, usually within the first few months, and others can be lost later to gum disease around the implant. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and poor cleaning raise the risk. Planning on a CBCT scan, a guided placement and regular hygiene visits keep it low, and if an implant does fail early it can usually be removed and replaced once the site has healed.
